Police and the Coast Guard on Lake Champlain in Burlington are looking for a man who was reported to be armed and then stole a sailboat.

This is connected to the large police presence in Burlington's New North End.

Burlington Police said on Wednesday morning, two officers were called to a welfare check of a man passed out in a running vehicle.

The vehicle matched the description of a gun that was used in a gun-involved robbery about a week ago. Police said when they got there, the man was belligerent and uncooperative. The man drove off, assaulting both officers with the vehicle.

On Wednesday night, the vehicle was found in the North Avenue Cooperative. Officers saw the man and he ran then got on a stolen bicycle. Multiple people saw him with a firearm.

The man made his way to Appletree Bay, where he stole a sailboat, but the Coast Guard was able to stop it along the cliff at Rock Point. The man left the boat and is believed to be hiding in the trees on the cliff.

Officers at the top of the cliff have tried to make contact with the man and start negotiations.
